As we draw close to the new year, plans and goals are being set and discussed. In what ways can you make your company better in 2019? Have you updated your website lately?

It’s the face of your company to the world. It’s important that your customers have a good first impression or return visit. If you’re anything like us, you strive to make the best experience for the user. Below are some simple ways you can improve your website for the new year.

Relevant Content with Analytics

You can only manage what you measure. Looking at your site’s metrics is a good strategy for knowing what’s working and not working. Google Analytics is a good place to start. Track metrics on your site, for example:

  • The most viewed pages
  • Which links are being clicked the most
  • How long a user stays on a page, etc.

With this knowledge, you can alter your content accordingly. The more you know your customers, the better.

No one wants to read a wall of text on a web page. You want to find the information you're searching for as quickly as possible. Videos are one of the easiest ways to consume information and it can also be fun and entertaining. Keep them short and sweet to hold the attention of the person watching. What better way to also make your website more appealing and interactive?

Install SSL Certificate

Using SSL ensures that all data transmitted between a web server and browser remains encrypted. If you want a boost in Search Engine Optimization (SEO), this is an easy method to give you an edge. Over 40% of the sites on the first page of Google are HTTPS. It's not a surprise since Google has confirmed that they favor HTTPS sites. There are free and paid options, depending on your host, and many tutorials for setting it up.

Calls to Action

As a web designer, I always ask myself two questions:

  • What is the purpose of my webpage?
  • What do I want the user to do once they arrive on the page?


You never want to leave the user at a dead end, with no place to go, because they will most likely exit your site. Encourage the user to fill out a form, or pick up the phone and call. You always want some kind of action on the user’s part. Calls to action can be in the form of a button that leads to a landing page or a form that captures a user’s information. It could even be a call to contact you directly.

Less Sliders

The problem with sliders is that they seem like advertisements. I find myself ignoring them. The movement and the rotation makes it difficult to focus on one slide, which affects clicks. The better solution would be to have landing pages for each message. This way the message is not hindered by other things our your site and the goal is clear. This doesn’t mean that all sliders are bad. Sliders for aesthetic reasons are completely fine.

The easier your site is to use with relevant content and security, the more traffic you will get returning to your site. Building a website is a process, and it’s important to know what works and what doesn’t. Simplicity is often the answer, less is more.
